I have two accomplishments to report for today:
1. I baked the No-Knead Bread from the New York Times finally. It was everything it promised to be and I highly recommend it.
2. After reaching the 50,000 mark right on time in NaNoWriMo I have made my novel available online. Check out how you can get a copy in my NaNoWriMo blog entry about it. |

| I should be writing |
[Nov. 8th, 2006|08:13 pm] |
For anyone who hasn't heard the word, I am attempting NaNoWriMo this year. That's National Novel Writing Month for those not in the know. It means I will write a novel (50,000 words) in 30 days.
I am blogging all about it. Just not here. Check it out if you wish:

Sorry LJ, but I wanted a little WordPress in my life.
Okay, back to plugging away at my writing. |

so there's a new pew report all about the blogosphere and it made me feel guilty for being one of those nasty infrequent bloggers. plus, i think the entire west coast has forgotten that i exist. maybe a few east coasters need a refresher too.
yesterday i received two jugs of tide free laundry detergent in the mail. apparently they are from the folks at mysuvey and i am supposed to tell them what i think. i have been known to be horribly allergic to tide in the past (i once missed two days in middle school due to tide), but since this is fragrance and other substances free, i guess i'll give it a go. |

putting ikea stuff together is one of my favorite things.
zip car might be one of my new favorite things. today i drove a toyota tacoma to ikea and back for a couch. the zip car part was simple as can be. the 99 cent breakfast at ikea was delicious.
the sorry suckers who came to ikea a half hour after it opened instead of a half hour before were laughed at. (breakfast is served 30 minutes before the store opens)
see the rest of the event. |

oh yeah, and to shovel the driveway. it helps burn up the baked goods.

| american elf - review |
[Jan. 29th, 2006|02:43 pm] |

american elf: james kochalka's collected sketchbook diaries was yet another book that i was resistant to pick up. it kept appearing in my amazon recommendations and seemed to be lurking everywhere i looked. relying on my supposed love of only those things that are autobiographical, i somehow thought that elves didn't interest me.
the book isn't really about elves, as i finally came to realize. so i feel like an idiot, but it doesn't matter because i loved this one. watching james yell at people and wonder why he does it made me believe in his honesty. watching him shiver in the cold, do his taxes and sweat in the heat over and over again was somehow thrilling. like the circle of life without elton john's soundtrack.
i feel a bit like a broken record sometimes, but i will offer my advice again to read graphic novels. this one is excellent. for a taste, check out american elf online for the strip of the day. |

i think a display in a bookstore finally turned me on to this craze. i picked up a cheapy copy of 'extreme sudoku' by dell publishers and got a bit hooked (though i often become frustrated and unhappy due to my inability to solve a puzzle).
today, while i sit around all alone (oh don't feel bad) waiting for my flight on santa's sleigh (i arrive at 11:59 p.m.) i decided to look up the article attached to a praise quote in my new sudoku book. according to the economist, it is 'a puzzling global phenomenon' and i wanted to know more. here is my favorite quote from my research:
'Sudoku is so universal that it is plausible that alien civilisations have been doing them for aeons.' - new scientist 12.24.2005
the same article claims 6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960, or approximately 6.67 billion trillion different grids are possible. even more puzzles are possible due to different starting configurations leading to each solution. awesome.
so really, the sudoku craze could go on forever. from new scientist:
'If you don't yet know how to do a sudoku then let us be the first to say: welcome back to civilisation, how did the solo trek across Antarctica go?'
jump on the bandwagon, jump off the bridge, whatever, play free online sudoku to give it a whirl. |

i requested that the boston public library purchase 'will you still love me if i wet the bed?' by liz prince and, to my surprise, they actually did. so any of you bpl cardholders can get your paws on a copy. i also have a copy in my ownership because i couldn't not.

so i know i have said a few times that the list is in no particular order, but i found myself saving this one for last. its hilarious relationship antics will have you giggling and the excessive cuteness is too charming to be annoying. now that you've all read some jeffrey brown, you will also get a kick out of the introduction he does for this book.
buy a copy, pass it around, and then buy another. also check out what liz is up to. and while you're at it, check out what julia wertz has to say about this book.
cheers! |

again, i was surprised to find myself enjoying this one. it's straight up fiction, but the story is so excellent, i couldn't stop reading. also, sometimes it's really nice to read a long sort of epic graphic novel.

i always see a story of intertwining characters and think that it'll be too complicated for me to like. then, i always end up liking the heck out of such stories. alex robinson's 'tricked' is a prime example. with the length of this book, there is time enough to befriend all six people and have a good time doing it. |

i really like autobiographical stuff, or at least slice-of-life, so i was not expecting to like this at all. the glowing reviews dragged me in and i was hooked.

in the world of 'y: the last man' by brian k. vaughan, all the men have mysteriously up and died. except for one dude. and his monkey. craziness ensues. the art is in color, a pleasant change from your average indie comic.
volume one was awesome, two and three impressed me even more. but volumes four and five were a bit of a let down. volume six is out now, but my library doesn't have it. i hope that it's an improvement on the previous two.
the single issue comics are still being put out, so the story is still alive. |

another travel type graphic novel is my pick for today. just released this year, 'pyongyang' by guy delisle was an informative and humorous look at north korea.

the artwork kind of fits the dismal sounding surroundings that the author experienced. a lot of greyish colors as opposed to hard black lines. i knew little about the country before reading this and what i learned was a little surprising and intriguing. |

the list is back and number six is a little book known as 'aeiou: any easy intimacy' by jeffrey brown.

this is one volume in the so-called girlfriend trilogy. though i seem to have rated these books as average, i love them all. anyone who reads 'clumsy' simply must read the slim companion called 'be a man' because i have rarely laughed so hard.
start by checking out jeffrey brown's web presence and get hip to the jive.
as a side note, i filled out a purchase request at my local library for 'clumsy' and they followed through a few months back. today, while picking up my weekly armload of hold requests, i noticed it in the returns pile. it looked pretty loved. |

today is number five out of the ten best graphic novels or comics i read this year (they weren't necessarily published this year)
we know people like this guy, heck we might be this guy. joe matt portrays himself honestly in 'poor bastard' as a jerk. it's funny and i guess we all have moments that we're not proud of.
this one can be hard to get ahold of, so the library is an excellent place to look. his other book is called 'fair weather' and it's about him as a kid. an annoying little fellow, but a good read. |

| list day four, uh, and a half |
[Dec. 16th, 2005|07:50 am] |
well i'm a few hours late. in my defense i was attending a holiday party and so my schedule was off. so here it is.

from the author of 'blankets' (craig thompson) comes this in-between book, 'carnet de voyage' to appease his fans. i was definitely appeased and i love travel writing. i have now discovered that i love travel writing with sketches even better. there were a few teases, i think, in this one that may come up in the next book. i can't wait. |
